7 Proven Social Media Marketing Tips to Improve Engagement & Your ROI
Social media has taken the world by storm, providing a direct way for people – and businesses – to share, connect and engage with each other. With the various social media platforms available, however, knowing where to focus your campaigns and grow a presence for your business can be confusing (if not overwhelming).
And if you don’t have a clear plan (or goals) when you get started, blindly jumping into social media marketing for your business can seem like falling down a rabbit hole.
To help you avoid this pitfall, this week, I’m sharing some helpful (and essential) social media marketing tips that I’ve learned from research, trial, error, and successes. Using these as best practices to get started on social media (or to revamp tired, unsuccessful strategies) can help you gain a better ROI while establishing more authority for your brand on social media:
1. Figure out who you’re targeting before you dive in – If you don’t have a clear idea of who your target audience (or ideal client) is, you’re probably going to be wasting your time, money and other resources jumping straight into social media marketing. So, make sure you know precisely who you want to target, connect with and engage on social media. This can help you determine:
● What types of posts, images, subjects, etc. will be most appealing to your target audience (and ideal client).
2. Start slow and focus on one platform at a time – This is crucial. If you try to build a presence on multiple social networks at the same time (or before your brand is really established on any network), you’re probably going to be spreading your resources thin and not really succeeding at gaining traction on any of the networks. So focus on one platform at a time. You can always add another platform later. And, as you do this, be sure to also:
● Develop a thoughtful, optimized profile on the network
● Set up a posting schedule that you can stick to (so there’s regularity and reliability in your posts).
3. Closely monitor the results – You’ll never know what’s working (or what’s turning people off) if you don’t analyze how your posts and campaigns perform. So, make it a habit to regularly check the results of your social media campaigns so you can pinpoint the types of posts (and the topics and timing) that are most effective.
4. Don’t be afraid to try something new – Trying out new tactics on social media can keep your posts fresh for your followers – and it can be central to figuring out even better ways to connect with your target audience on social media.
5. Check out and respond to others’ posts – Or, put in another way, you have to give value and attention in order to get it back on social media. So take notice of others’ posts and comments, instead of just focusing on publishing your own posts. Be open to commenting on, sharing and/or liking others’ posts (especially those who are your ideal client or who may be social media “influencers”).
6. Close the loop – Add social media buttons on your website, and incorporate your blogs (and other quality content) into your social media posts. A word of caution here: don’t only feature your own content or marketing message in your social media post (because this can be off-putting and come across as too “salesy” or disingenuous). Be sure to incorporate interesting stories, helpful tips or other content that your target audience will find valuable and compelling.
7. Be patient and don’t get discouraged – It can take time to dial into to the best social media strategies for your brand and audience. So, don’t give up or go on autopilot when things seem to stagnate (or when you simply aren’t getting the results you want). Be patient, keep trying, and remember that you can always turn to an expert for help.
