What could boost up the growing trend of “Selfies” if not a social network about pictures sharing?

Instagram is among the first application that gives exposure to this new social phenomenon.

What is a Selfie?

A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. They are often casual, and are typically taken either with a camera held at arm’s length or in a mirror. Even though Selfies have been common long before the advent of Facebook or Instagram, they have certainly contributed heavily to make it a popular thing, so much so that the very word Selfie was announced as being the word of the year by the Oxford English Dictionary.

Selfies have become main attraction by many of Instagram Users and viewers. Very common and searched for are the Selfies posted on Instagram by famous people: Actors, musicians, top models, Government officials, journalists and more. It has become like an ongoing fight for audience and likes both by famous and common people, that of posting Selfies in the most strange, peculiar, unique places, position, faces and clothes.

Selfies are quickly and unavoidably becoming the most populare genre of pictures on Instagram like everywhere else. The Telegraph reported that a recent poll of British people from age 18-24 discovered that selfies are the most popular genre of photography – in fact, 30 percent of the photos young people that age take are selfies. That means 3 out of every 7 pictures snapped was of them, probably pouting. And don’t think this is a teen girl thing – men self-reported as more prolific selfie-takers than women. In the near future beautiful landscape pictures, tasty delicious dishes reports, and group of friends pictures posted on Instagram will be outclassed by this new kind of photo-shooting. By the way, not that too much in the near future, but at present. Of the top ten hashtags present on Instagram at least two selfie related rank up on high. Instagram has become thereby a mean to the aim: in simple words a mirror of the modern society motto: “Look at me, but first at me!”. We may never know if the Instagram Authors ever anticipated their creation would be hosting a predominating number of me pictures, but for sure they never dreamed of a boring infinite list of replica pictures of different characters stored in their App!
